Will the ice break on the Santa Cruz River this month?

The lack of our 1st 100° day at this point in May isn’t shocking. Regardless, the relatively unsettled stretch of weather has folks wondering if we’ll see triple digit temps this month.

Above is the morning run of the GFS model. These panels show the wind pattern at 18,000 feet above ground (500mb in geek speak) through next Friday, the 22nd. Do you see a big high pressure ridge setting up over Arizona? I sure don’t. The GFS says “Trough Fest” continues as a series of storm systems swing through the state.

A lot can change, but I would say odds favor the Old Pueblo staying triple digit free between now and the 22nd. As far as the rest of May? Still thinking we’ll break the proverbial ice before June arrives.
