Each week on the blog, I’ll pick one viewer photo for the #SkyCandy of the Week award. The prize? Pride! What an incredible sunset on Labor Day. One of our viewers captured it at a very picturesque location in the Old Pueblo.
Photographer: Andrea Lochner
Location: Gates Pass in the Tucson Mountains
Date taken: September 7th, 2015
Camera: Samsung Galaxy S6, set on Pro mode
That’s what I said: Notice the slight sun pillar on the right of the photo just above the ridgeline. This is created from ice crystals that are horizontally oriented (laying flat) and falling through the atmosphere. The sunlight reflects off of them, creating the vertical beam. Spectacular!
