Climatology 101: Anatomy of Ajo’s wettest October

While the Old Pueblo recorded its 5th wettest October, a town in western Pima County obliterated a record.

The town of Ajo received 5.77″ rain in October 2018, shattering the old record of 3.14″ set back in 1914. Ajo’s average October rainfall is a mere 0.40″.

5.03″ of this rain came in the first three days of the month, courtesy of moisture from Tropical Storm Rosa. Another storm system helped produce 0.16″ rain on October 12th, followed by 0.58″ on the 13th.

According to the National Weather Service, Ajo’s 5.77″ rain last month was more than the last 17 Octobers combined. Between 2001-2017, Ajo received a cumulative October rain total of 5.63″.
